Detailed Itinerary   Top of Page

Day 1-Seattle-Iceland

The fun begins as you board your direct flight on Iceland Air, bound for the Land of Ice and Fire. During your night flight be sure to check the window for Northern lights in the sky. Call for other departure airports. (meals on own)

Day 2-Reykjavik City Tour

Upon arrival, we will take a comprehensive city tour of Reykjavik. The following are just some of the sights. Weave through narrow alleys framed with old timber houses, and learn about the life of the Icelandic capital from its very beginning to the present day. Pass Hallgrimskirkja-Church and enjoy a photo stop at H”fŠi house, where the Reagan/Gorbachev summit meeting took place in 1986. From the City Hall we take a walk through the city center to the street where the first settler built his house. We go to an exhibition showing us the change of Reykjav”k during the last 200 years. Next to the Parliament and Lutheran cathedral we pass the sculpture of Sk£li Magn£sson, the founder of Reykjav”k. We then head towards the city pond to enjoy different types of birds, including geese, whooper swans and mallard ducks. Later, we drive to the harbour, home of a large fleet of whale watching and fishing boats. Enjoy the panoramic view over Reykjavik, the fjord and mountains from the balcony at the Pearl. Further on we reach the geothermal outdoor swimming pool in Laugardalur to learn what Icelanders are doing with the warm water from the hot springs. Last but not least we drive past the sculpture museum and garden of µsmundur Sveinsson, before heading to your hotel for the next 4 nights. (meals on own)

Day 3-Sightseeing

Get ready for another scenery-packed day, starting with a trip to čingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We stroll around the country's most sacred site, home of the oldest existing parliament in the world, the Alēingi. Thingvellir is a most geologically spectacular place, set on a vast plain flanked by large fissures, right on Iceland's largest lake, Thingvallavatn. We drive to the mighty Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall), where the river Hvit  tumbles 105 feet in a double cascade. Later, we explore the geothermal active valley of Haukadalur which contains the spouting geysers Geysir and Strokkur. This otherworldly area is covered with multicoloured pools of water and mud. Then we drive on to Sk lholt. We pass the greenhouse town of HveragerŠi and continue over the mountain pass HellisheiŠi, an area with large lava fields and steaming valleys. Passing the geothermal power station HellisheiŠarvirkjun, we learn how Icelanders use the energy from the earth for heating their homes. Tonight we will take a northern lights tour, chasing the Aurora Borealis. On a clear night and with a little luck we can see the lights swirl around in dramatic shapes across the night sky-truly an amazing sight. We reserve the right to reschedule if the circumstances are not favourable. Sightings of the Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed. (B)

Day 4-Free Day, or Optional South Shore Adventure

Enjoy this day on your own, or take the optional tour that takes in the coast lowlands. The tour includes rivers, glaciers, spectacular waterfalls, farms and villages. We also visit the world's most beautiful black lava beach, Reynisfjara, famous for its bird species including puffins. (B)

Day 5-Free Day, or Optional Borgarfjrdur Valley Adventure

Another free day to explore, or take a journey that includes the Hvalfj”rŠur Fjord with its famous wool factory on your way to the valley of Borgarfj”rŠur. Visit lava fields, hot springs, amazing rock formations, the Gr br¢k volcano and so much more. Tonight you may wish to take another optional tour to see the northern lights, weather permitting. (B)

Day 6-Iceland-Home

In the morning after breakfast, we're off to the Reykjanes peninsula and the Blue Lagoon which is 100% powered by Iceland's clean geothermal energy. Enjoy bathing and relaxing in Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater, known for its positive effects on the skin. After a relaxing soak we will transfer to the airport for your return flight back home. (B)
